We continue to see the glory of our Savior as the divine Son of God in the gospel of Mark. Last time, we saw how Jesus demonstrated His divine power over the forces of nature, by stilling a raging storm at sea with a word. In the story of the Gadarene demoniac, we will see how Jesus delivers a raging, demon-possessed man by His divine power and authority over Satan and his demons. This story shows us the reality and power of demonic forces in the lives of those they possess. This poor man had gone completely mad. He wore no clothes, lived among the tombs, cut himself with stones, and was continually crying out in anguish and pain, as his mind, body, and soul were tormented by a host of demons. His condition was hopeless, as no one could restrain him, not even with chains and fetters.
Into this backdrop of hopelessness and despair, enters our blessed, compassionate Savior. He comes through a fierce storm, as He crossed over from the other side of the lake, in order to save this poor man. Jesus came into this world and into our lives to set us free from our bondage and despair. He is a merciful, loving, and compassionate Savior. And He has power to deliver, heal, and restore the most hopeless of cases, as demonstrated by the life of Legion. This passage is full of hope for us and for our loved ones who are yet in bondage to sin and Satan.
As you read the passage, consider the following questions:
- How do people today view the spirit world, and how does this passage correct those erroneous views?
- Why did Jesus grant the demons’ plea to enter the pigs, and what does that tell us about the man’s deliverance?
- Why did the people beg Jesus to depart from their region, and what does that tell us about their bondage and priorities?
- Why did Jesus deny the request of Legion to be with him, and what does that teach us about Jesus denying our requests at times?
- How did the man demonstrate his discipleship to Christ? (The answer is found in his request and what he did afterwards.)
May the Lord show us more of Christ this Sunday, and fill us with joy and gratitude for His deliverance in our lives.
