Mark continues in his gospel to prove the assertion that he made in the beginning that Jesus of Nazareth is the Christ, the Son of God, who was promised in the OT scriptures.
In chapter 4, we saw Jesus demonstrate His divine authority by calming a raging storm with a simple command. The winds and the waves immediately obeyed His voice. In our passage this week, Mark once again reveals Jesus’ absolute sovereignty over creation. As the disciples struggle against a violent storm on the Sea of Galilee, Jesus comes to them walking on the water. He then enters the boat, causes the wind to cease, and immediately brings them safely to their destination.
This account is far more than another miracle story. It reveals the glory of Christ, strengthens the faith of His followers, and teaches us how to trust Him in the midst of life’s storms.
As you read this passage, consider the following questions:
- Why would Jesus send His disciples on the sea, knowing that they will face a severe storm? What does this teach us about facing trials while we are in the will of God?
- Why did Jesus regularly withdraw to spend time alone with His Father in prayer? What does His example teach us about our own daily need for communion with God?
- Jesus saw His disciples struggling in the middle of the lake, and He came to them by walking on the water to rescue them. How does this encourage us when we are going through seasons of hardship and suffering?
- Mark tells us that the disciples were utterly astonished because they had not understood the significance of the feeding of the five thousand. Their hearts were still hardened, and they failed to recognize what that miracle revealed about Jesus’ divine power and compassionate care. What lesson should we learn from this as we face future trials?
Matthew’s account tells us that when Jesus entered the boat and the wind ceased, the disciples worshiped Him, saying, “Truly You are the Son of God.”
May the Lord grant us hearts that not only marvel at Christ’s power but also respond in humble faith and wholehearted worship as we gather together this Lord’s Day.
