Jesus began his Galilean ministry by proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and calling people to repentance and faith in him. In our study today, we will see somewhat of a typical Sabbath day in the life of our Lord. He teaches at the synagogue, casts out demons, and heals the sick. For those who heard him and experienced his healing it was not a typical Sabbath day by any means. They were struck with his authoritative teaching and his transformative healing. He taught, not as the scribes, but with clarity and authority. And he healed with divine authority, just by speaking a word. He demonstrates power over demonic spirits and over every form of disease and illness. And what was the response of the people? They were astonished beyond measure and spread his fame throughout all the regions of Galilee (cf. Mark 1:27-28).
As you read Mark 1:21-34, please consider the following questions:
- The people’s response to Jesus’ teaching was that he taught them with authority and not like the scribes (cf.1:22). Can you identify the distinctives of authoritative preaching compared to other kinds of preaching? (hint- 2 Tim 4:1-4)
- In what way does Jesus’ supreme authority embolden us to share the gospel with confidence, even when it is offensive to the natural person?
- As you consider the complete transformation of the demon-possessed man (in vv.23-26), take time to reflect on how Jesus has broken the bondage of sin in your life, and praise God for that. Then ask: Am I still going to Jesus to deliver me from remaining sins and troubles?
- What lesson can you draw from Peter’s mother-in-law’s immediate response to her healing in verses 29-31?
- What do you learn about the heart of Christ in his healing of the multitude in verses 32-34? (see also Luke 4:40)
May the Lord help us see the glory of our Savior in his power and compassion, that we may adore him more and lean on him more.
