In Lamentations 3, the prophet Jeremiah identifies himself with his nation that is suffering in exile. As he does, he becomes a type of Christ bearing the consequences of the sin of His people. The prophet receives a brief respite from the anguish as he recalls two attributes of God in verses 20-24 – his chesed (steadfast mercy) and his emunah (faithfulness). These are two communicable attributes of God that God’s people ought to reflect as a product of Christ in us.
