Chapter 39 picks up where chapter 37 left off. Chapter 38 was devoted to Judah and Tamar. We left Joseph bound as a common slave on his way to Egypt.
Chapter 39 stresses strongly that the LORD was with Joseph some 8 times in this chapter. This is Yahweh the covenant form of God’s name stressing Joseph was in covenant just like his father Jacob had been.

1st The LORD was with Joseph. vs 1-6
2nd awareness of the Lord’s presence enables Joseph and His people to resist temptation. Vs 7-20
3rd The LORD was with Joseph amidst his persecution & in prison. Vs 21-23
