Olivet Discourse 4: His Unmistakable Coming

Dec 09, 2018 By: Pastor Joseph LoSardo Series: Messiah in Matthew Scripture: Matthew 24:26-35
The main purpose of chapter 24 of Matthew is summarized in verse 25: “See, I have told you beforehand.” Because Jesus has given adequate warning, the apostles as well as Christians in subsequent generations, are not to be shocked, surprised, or caught off-guard by His return. He describes His return in earth-shattering terms that will be evident and unmistakable to all. John confirms in Revelation 1:7 – “Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him…” While Messiah’s first coming was quiet and humble in the obscure earthly town of Bethlehem, His second coming will be cosmic and dramatic and unmistakably clear. In this description Jesus agrees with the prophets Isaiah (13:9-13), Ezekiel (38:19-23), Daniel (7:13-14), Joel (ch. 2& 3) and Zechariah (14:1-9) who all describe God’s great coming to earth in observable celestial terms. Where then do some prophecy teachers come up with the idea of a “secret rapture”? Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 24 is clear; it is not a puzzle to be decoded by gifted prophetic teachers. Jesus will come back once, and at that time He will gather together His elect (Mt 24:31); this will take place “immediately after the tribulation of those days …” (Mt 24:29). In this discourse Jesus talks of his return, his second coming. Are you ready?
