Request 3: To Know the Unknowable Love

I. Introduction: What is Love? A. Love is a prolific concept in Scripture 1. A comparison to the Qu’ran B. Agape 1. Ephesians 4:15 2. Love one another: (Jn 13:34, Ro 13:8, 1 Pet 1:22, 1 Jn 4:7) 3. Philippians 1:9-10; 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 II. Rooted and grounded in love (vs. 17) A. Rooted – a botanical term B. Grounded – an architectural term C. This is not a separate request, but a transitory clause – the result of the second request and preparation for the third D. It refers to loving God and each other in the context of the church 1. It anticipates the commands of Ephesians 4:1-2, 5:1-2 2. The love of God is learned as we love one another E. Pray that God would show you where He wants you to be whenever the church is meeting together. F. … with all the saints … God so ordered things that those who love the fellowship of His people are in the best position to grasp the fullness of His love. What better way is there to experience Christ’s love than to love the ones whom He loves and died for? III. To be able to comprehend (vs. 18) A. That’s why were here! B. Comprehend: is a word related to the mind – love is a doctrine C. Be able to: is a reminder that it is not by natural intellect that we grasp these things, but with a mind prepared by God. D. All Bible doctrine points to Christ and His love E. The unregenerated person cannot know this love IV. To know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge (vs. 19) A. The meaning of the 4 dimensions of God’s love B. The benefits of knowing this love C. Knowing the Unknowable … is this a paradox or oxymoron? No. D. Experiential Love – you can know this love!
