John 3:16 – Set Free

Mar 21, 2004 By: Pastor Joseph LoSardo Series: Doctrinal Sermons Scripture: John 3:16-17
Perhaps the most beloved and memorized passage in all of Scripture; most Christians have some idea of what John 3:16 means as framed in light of modern evangelism. The understanding of this wonderful verse however has been tainted and misinterpreted in the today’s church. Unfortunately the wonderful truth of God’s genuine, specific and redeeming love toward His children has been subjugated by a modern emphasis on God’s general love for all mankind. This sermon goes through John 3:16 word by word explaining its precise sense in context, setting it free from the meaning which has been determined by modern evangelicalism. Who does God love? What is the world? Does this verse teach universal or particular redemption? For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. Rather than some nebulous invitation, this is a beautiful verse of Scripture which the Christian can embrace as definitive proof of God’s specific love for him.
