We are called God’s friend only because of His sovereign grace whereby He chooses to make us His friends. Jesus Christ chooses his friends for a very specific purpose – to bear fruit and so glorify God. One of the privileges of this friendship is our union with Christ – who is our friend, as well as ‘the vine’ in whom we abide. As branches have as their main function, the bearing of fruit which is for the pleasure of the husbandman, we are chosen and appointed to bear fruit for God.
