A Father’s Plea

Jun 16, 2013 By: Damien Garofalo Series: Proverbs Scripture: Proverbs 5
In the fifth chapter of Proverbs, the Father’s plea is intensified. His precepts are absolute. His warnings are more dire than before. In this passage, the Father concentrates his admonition on the adulteress woman. He exhorts his children to keep far away from her, for her ways lead to death and destruction. The ravaging effects of adultery are clearly brought to light in this passage. However, the Father also anticipates a response from his son, who, if he willingly follows the allure of the forbidden woman, would have revealed himself to have despised discipline and failed to listen to the instruction (v12-14). Discipline can be painful, but it is necessary – it keeps children from wandering off into destructive paths. The Father wants the heart of his children. He wants them to understand his love and care for them. This is why he earnestly pleas for them to take heed to his counsel and avoid the trap of sin. Likewise, our Heavenly Father warns, rebukes, and corrects us, His children. We are all prone to wander, but how far we wander will reveal how well we receive discipline. Either we heed the warnings of our Father and turn back to Him, or we despise discipline and wind up on the brink of utter ruin.
